Best Jigsaw 2019 – Reviews & Buyer’s Guide

A jigsaw is a power tool commonly used for cutting curves. It came into existence after scroll saw and band saw because a jigsaw is very handy and has the property of both. It can handle almost all of the curved cuts you’ll want to make and more. It’s versatile, takes up no space like previous saws and it’s affordable in fact.

It uses a small blade and it cuts with an up-and-down motion. The thin size of the blades makes it easy to cut pretty tight radiuses and it’s handy for cutting holes something a bandsaw can’t do.

Most jigsaws come with variable speeds that are useful for preventing burning as it cuts. In general, you can use a fast speed for pine and other softwoods and slower speed to reduce burning on hardwoods.

No matter, whether you are a professional woodworker or a hobbyist, you will need a powerful jigsaw after buying a wood router and a router table. So, I have made a list of 15 best jigsaw along with comparison table, features, pros & cons, Frequently Asked Questions, and Buyer’s Guide at last.

If you are searching a jigsaw for simple craft projects at a cheaper price then this is best for you.

Don’t worry, it is cheap in price, not in quality. This 5.2 pounds Black & Decker strong-built jigsaw has 5 Amp motor which provides 3,000 strokes per minute with a stroke length of 3/4 inches and this is enough to cut wood or any metals like aluminum. But, the only thing you will have to do is change blades. Always use blades according to material otherwise, no matter how best your jigsaw is, you will suffer.

It comes with curve control technology that will help you to adjust the orbit of the saw. You can set it from 1 to 4 depending on the type of work. For example, if you want to do a curve cut then set it to 4 and set it to 1 for straight cuts.

If you want to do angle cuts then its beveling shoe feature will help you.

You will not need any tool to change its blade because it comes with tool-less blade feature.

This 5 pounds Skil 4495-02 jigsaw has a 6-ampere motor which provides 3,200 strokes per minute with a stroke length of 3/4 inches. Actually, it has custom molded blade rest design which makes it safer and also prevent the blade from damaging the wood or metal which you are cutting.

To be honest, this is not a long runner tool because you may see wear and tear after 9~12 months of regular use.

This jigsaw can easily cut:

  • 2-9/16 inch thick wood,
  •  1/2 inch thick aluminum, &
  • 1/4 inch thick steel.

This jigsaw model comes with two U-shank blades:

This 10 pounds Bosch JS470EB jigsaw has a 7-Amp inductive motor which provides 3,100 strokes per minute with a stroke length of 1-inch.

You might think that what is the difference between Bosch JS470EB and Bosch JS470E?

The answer is “nothing”. Both have the same technical specifications. The Bosch JS470E has a more traditional look than this. Bosch JS470EB has a barrel grip but not so many people prefer this design, that’s why I gave it the eighth position. But personally, I like this design because it gives more control due to the closeness of hands and material.

This Bosch JS470EB tool can also cut the softwood of thickness up to 5~7/8 “, 4/5 inch aluminum, and 2/5 inch mild steel.

It comes with a bevel wrench, through which you can perform 45-degree bevel cuts easily but you will face problem while doing angular cuts because it does not have any bevel detents or presets.

Best Jigsaw 2019 – Buyer’s Guide

Now, after looking at 15 best jigsaws, it’s time to decide which one to choose. So, let’s see what are those things you should check before buying it.

Power of MotorStroke Rate Per MinuteOrbital SettingsAble To Make Bevel CutsChanging of BladeLED LightsDust blower & Dust CollectorCorded or Cordless?Handle TypesJigsaw Vibration

How much power, the motor should have?

  • For corded jigsaw: 5~7 Ampere
  • For cordless jigsaw: 18~20 volts

It is easy to choose, if you want to cut tough materials then go for higher ampere or volts, i.e, up to 7 Amp or 20 volts. More powerful motor can cut the materials easily.

Does SPM matter?

SPM matters only when there is a variable speed setting feature. Don’t buy any jigsaw if it doesn’t have this feature. Normally, good jigsaws come with 3,000 to 3,200 SPM with 4~6 variable speed settings. All of these settings are for different purposes which can be set by a switch present on it. For example,

  • High-Speed Rate Setting: For Wood
  • Average Speed Rate Setting: For aluminum or plastic
  • Low-Speed Rate setting: For stainless steel
  • Very Low-Speed Rate Setting: For ceramics.

Well, if you have small projects to do then you can go with a less SPM jigsaw, but with a variable speed setting.

You will need an orbital setting feature if you are dealing with different materials because it requires different degrees of orbit.

The orbital setting feature allows you to control the jigsaw in sideways movement too along with up and down with a circular motion ( or pendulum motion ). You can set the orbit with the help of a selection lever. For example,

  • 0 Gear: Round cut in hard materials,
  • 0/1 Gear: Sharp-edged cut, &
  • 2/3 Gear: Soft materials.

Yes, it is necessary because you can’t tilt at any angle without bevel cut feature. Nowadays, most of the branded jigsaws like Bosch or Dewalt comes with this feature which can make bevel cuts up to 45 degrees.

You can change its angle by loosening or tightening the screws which are present on the base of the jigsaws. Tightening screw will result in fixing the bevel cuts at a particular angle.

Some of the jigsaws come with Allen wrench or a built-in locking level for bevel angle adjustments.

Always buy a jigsaw which has a push-button system for blade change because you definitely do not want to waste your time on changing the blade by using a wrench. Bytheway, most of the jigsaws come with that push button ( lever or flange ) system nowadays. You will have to just pull or push the lever that is located on the end of the blade to change the blade.

Do we really need LED lights?

It depends on you. If you are a professional then I don’t think you will need this, but for the beginners, it would be beneficial.

I am not telling, it is bad to have LED lights, in fact, it would be a bonus for you but you can not buy any jigsaw on the basis of LED lights.

LED lights basically help you to make cuts without going off track. If you do not have this feature on your jigsaw then don’t worry, just mark a line using carpenter pencil.

Is it necessary?

Yes. Your eyes are also important along with getting a clean visible cut.

Dust blower removes the sawdust by passing a jet of the constant air stream, making the visibility of your cutting line clear.

The dust collector is actually more important because it sucks all the wood chips and dust preventing eyes injuries. There is a dust port on jigsaw in which a vacuum can be attached. The problem is that you will have to purchase it separately.

Today, there is no problem in going with a cordless jigsaw because technology has developed, there is no problem with the battery too. Nowadays, it takes a maximum of 30 minutes to charge and has more runtime.

So, it depends on you which one do you want to buy. There is no risk in going with any of these jigsaws.

I will suggest you to buy 2 batteries so that you can put your one of the batteries on charging while using the other.

There are two types of jigsaw handles:

  • Barrel Grip: Best if used only in the workshop.
  • Top Handle: It can be used in both workshop or other places where there is no workbench.

Barrel grip jigsaws are usually in D-shape and it must be handled with both the hands. So, it is easy and faster to work if workbench is available.

Top-handle is the latest design of a jigsaw. You do not need to handle it with both hands. That means you can use your second hand to fix the cutting material. That’s why it is easy to use in both conditions, i.e, with and without a workbench.

So, again it depends on your like, which design you prefer. My choice is the top handle jigsaw.

Vibration problem mainly comes in low priced jigsaws. More vibration will reduce accuracy and a precise cut. So, if you are buying any cheap ( in terms of price ) jigsaws then check whether it has vibration reducing feature or not.
